Golf Club - What's the Proper Length?

Golf Club - What's the Proper Length?

Golf Clubs

Many golfers often wonder if they are using the proper length golf club. I remember when I first started playing, I was on the range one day with a new driver I received as a gift and found myself spraying balls all over the place, finally, a fellow golfer mentioned he thought maybe my club was too long for just starting out. I thought about this and it pointed me on a journey to find out exactly what length my club should be.

Naturally, I went to Google and lo and behold there is an abundance of information regarding the proper length, grafts, and charts etc. all kinds of stuff to figure it out. Determining a comfortable length is pretty easy.

Normally you would take a floor to wrist measurement. Wear your regular shoes; stand straight up, back straight and level, arms relaxed straight down. Its best to have a friend help you so have them measure the distance between the floor and your left wrist, if you're left handed, measure the right wrist.

Golf club manufacturers have pretty well established the average length to satisfy the market and I believe they are close to being right-on. Here's a site with a good chart to determine the length based on height, etc. - golf club length

This chart will give you a pretty good idea where you should be. Check the clubs in your bag and compare. If you find a glaring difference you may want to consider making some adjustments. If you wish to experiment and do so at minimal cost than choose a low cost custom club manufacturer. I would suggest you start with a couple clubs before making a major commitment.

Good Luck,

Golf Setup -- Ball Position

Golf Setup -- Ball Position

Golf Clubs

I have a great tip for you that's going to end all the doubt you had in your mind about golf setup and where the golf ball goes in your stance. It's called ball position.

A lot of amateurs, unfortunately, address the golf ball, what I call, backwards. They come in and they put their feet down and try to aim where they're going, either down the fairway or towards the pin, and then they just stand to the golf club that they're holding onto. Sometimes their golf setup is too far back and sometimes it's too far forward.

Other amateurs do this. They like to play all of their shots off their front foot. Some like to play all their shots off the middle of their stance. But let me tell you something, and I think this is really going to help you.

This weekend if you're sitting around watching TV, watch the tour players and watch how they come up and they grip the golf club first, they take a look at where they're going, and then they stand to the golf club that they're using.

For instance, put the butt of the pitching wedge across from your belt buckle, and stand to the golf club with the face square and your shoulders going where you want them to go.

What that does is put the golf ball in the middle of your stance for your pitching wedge. Now, keep that stance with your 7 iron.

Now, the 7 iron is three inches longer than the pitching wedge. If you just stand there and grip it with your shoulders square, look how the golf ball is just starting to move forward in your stance over towards your left heel, and it's about three inches apart.

Now, pick up your long iron and do the same thing. Keep your shoulders square, don't move your stance, and grip the golf club. And all of a sudden, the long iron starts to move even further forward.

Lastly, watch this. During golf setup, when you hold your driver in your hand. If you just put the butt of the club across your belt buckle, put the club on the ground the way it was built in the factory and stand across from it with your shoulders square, that puts the golf ball across from your left foot.

It's not complicated, but remember this: During golf setup, stand to the handle of the golf club. Don't address the golf ball first, but address the golf club to the ball and then take your stance.

Golf Clubs For the Beginner Or Novice Golfer

Golf Clubs For the Beginner Or Novice Golfer

Golf Clubs

Do not buy a brand new set of golf clubs, yet

It is a good idea not to go out and buy a new set of golf clubs when you first take up the sport. Like anything one takes up that may have a chance of becoming a five minute wonder, it is a good idea to test the ground with the minimum of expense, in fact for free, if at all possible. The last thing you should do is go out and spend a silly amount of money on brand new equipment, only to give up and be left with another item taking up space in the loft, garage, or shed.

Beg, borrow, but don't steel !!

Before buying your first set of clubs, you should borrow or hire them, thus getting a feel of the different brands out there, as well as building up your skill and forming your own style of play. How you play will significantly influence the choice of clubs (brands, construction) that will suit you. Most golf clubs have the facility to hire out clubs and other golf equipment, in fact I myself have never come across a club that didn't, but you never know.

First set, should be a beginners set

Until you get to any decent degree of proficiency with the sport, the clubs you will use the most will be the number 3, 5, 7 and 9 irons, a 1, 5 or 7 club and of course a putter. With this in mind make sure the set of golf clubs you acquire (borrow/hire/buy) contains these clubs, then you will be ready to play.

Maxed to the 14

The maximum number of clubs a golfer is allowed to carry on a course is 14, but as a novice most of them would not be used, therefore stick with the ones mentioned above.

When length matters

When you select the golf clubs you will use, whether borrowed. Hired, or bought, you must check that they are the right length for you. Stance is critical, and you should be sure to get help if you are not confident about how to check this.

This is the game for me

Once you have been playing for a good while and have an idea of what you want from your clubs, then that is the time to get a brand new set that suits you and your style of play. This is the time to head to a decent shop. Your golfing colleagues or the people at your regular golfing haunt will be your best bet for advice on where to go.

The end is nigh

I hope this article has been of some use to you. I have and will produce more articles in good time. Click on this link below, and head to the bottom of the subsequent page for other links to articles written by myself.

Modern Golf Clubs & Their Effect on Your Game

Modern Golf Clubs & Their Effect on Your Game

Golf Clubs

The latest and greatest golf clubs are supposed to make it easier than ever to improve your game, they're designed to help you be more consistent, cater for you to make a wider range of mistakes than ever before and they are more lightweight with sweet spots that seem to grow every year. No longer do you have to put up clubs like they did in the past which were much less forgiving meaning that you either hit a great shot or a very poor one.

With all this technology about it seems like it should be easy to rely on it to quickly improve your game, but how often has a new club really made a big impression on your game? Let's face it, relying on new clubs to be the only thing you change in order to see improvements in your game is really a false hope. If you approach your golf development with this attitude you are likely to be disappointed more often than not and you'll find yourself a lot poorer too.

It's very important to remember that when it comes to improving your golf game there is much more to consider than just what clubs you are playing with. Sure, having a set of clubs that suits your game is a good place to start but at the end of the day if you aren't fit enough to swing the club correctly for the entire round you're unlikely to shoot the type of score you are aiming for.

The repeated demands that swinging a golf club put onto your core muscles means that you need to take the time to build up your strength and flexibility in this area. If you don't you'll find that in order to swing a golf club your body will make small adjustments to overcome your shortcomings leading to a swing that is neither accurate nor consistent.

By simply taking the time to do some regular exercise that targets these core muscles you will find that you'll see a big improvement in your performance regardless of the clubs that you are using. Any improvement in your stamina will allow you to retain your form throughout the course of your round avoiding the fatigue and drop in performance many people suffer on the final holes of the day, and let's be honest that's probably where you drop most of your shots isn't it?

Add a little bit of exercise into your golf training program and combined with the right clubs for you, whether they are the latest set or a comfortable set you've had for a while, you're going to start to play the best golf of your life.

Why Used Golf Clubs Are Good For Beginners

Why Used Golf Clubs Are Good For Beginners

Golf Clubs

Golf is not a game that is exactly easy to pick up on and it does require a good amount of equipment to play. You will need clubs, a bag, shoes, and possibly some other accessories. There are many choices as far as clubs are concerned and here are three reasons why used golf clubs are good for beginners.

First, you will be able to get used golf clubs for a much cheaper price than a new set. This is a big advantage to beginning golfers because they can get into the sport of golf without spending an arm and a leg. This is great because if you decide you don't like golf, then you are not out as much money as you would be if you were to purchase a brand new set of clubs.

Second, you will be giving your first set of golf clubs a good beating so you might as well be beating up used clubs that you don't have as much invested in. Beginning golfers have a tendency to put extra stress on golf clubs because they are developing their swing and learning the game. With this said, there is no reason that you should spend hundreds of dollars on a set of clubs in order to learn how to play golf.

Third, if you can hit a less than perfect club, then it will be much easier for you to hit a perfect club. You should learn how to hit clubs that are not custom fit for you and are not the most technologically advanced so that when you are more into the game and ready to purchase an expensive set of golf clubs, then you will be prepared to hit the more expensive and advanced golf clubs.

If you are a beginning golfer your money is better spent on lessons with a good teaching pro and on a range pass so that you can hit as many golf balls as you want on the range. You should spend more time practicing and taking lessons, then worrying about your equipment. As long as your clubs are solid, have decent grips, and are relatively the right length for you, then you will be ok. Even if the grips are not so good you can have the clubs re-gripped for a few dollars a club.

So if you are planning on taking up golf you should consider purchasing a used set of golf clubs because the price will be better for you, you can beat the clubs up without feeling bad about it, and if you can hit a poor golf club, then you can hit a good golf club.

3 Parts Of A Golf Club - Their Importance Explained

3 Parts Of A Golf Club - Their Importance Explained

Golf Clubs

We play the game of golf hardly ever wondering about the parts of the club, as we look at it as a whole on its own, as in one piece. Still, it is good to know about the constructive parts of the club, who knows it may help improve your game a little bit as well. Every inch of the club is made for a particular reason, and is there the affect the hit in a predetermined fashion. Let us divide the club into three parts, the hand grip, the head and the shaft. When you have adequate information about the different parts of the club and why they are there, you will also be able to use the same to help your game. Read on to find out more about the parts of the golf club.

1. The golf club grip

This is the area you hold when you are making a shot. Its importance is obvious, since this is where you feel the club connecting to the ball. As per golf rules, this grip is supposed to be a smoothened surface without bumps to help you hold it, however small depressions are allowed. It could be made of leather or hardened rubber, and their sizes depend on the size of the user's hands. You need to try out a few different kinds of grips before you select a favorite.

2. The golf club shaft

This is the longest area of the club and is what connects the head to the grip, and this to has to be a smoothened round surface as per the laws of golf. The shafts of the day are made out of carbon and steel, the carbon material being the more favored at present. But then again, like anything else it is more the players? preference that finally counts as per the size and material of the shaft. The most important factor of a shaft is the stiffness level, you will want a harder shaft if you are planning to play harder strokes, like the first shot of the game for example. On the other hand, you may want a slightly flexible if you cannot really make powerful stroke with your own energy, and need some bend from the shaft.

3. The club's head

This is one of the most important parts of the club, as it is the point of impact with the ball. The heads come in various appearances though. These variations are categorized mainly into woods, iron and putters, with differences being thanks to the kind of hit you are planning to play. The wood variety tends to have the maximum sized heads, irons are used for a variety of shots and putters are made to help you play extremely accurate strokes on the green area.

Once you learn these little things about the parts of the club, you will no doubt get a better idea of what club to use for what shot.

Golf Tips For Hitting the Long Irons

Golf Tips For Hitting the Long Irons

Golf Clubs

Golf irons are typically used for shorter golf shots that range from 200 yards to less than 100 yards. The best iron to use is determined by the loft of the club head as well as the golfer's ability to hit the ball a specific distance. Golf irons typically include a set of eleven irons, numbered one (long) through nine (short), a pitching wedge, and a sand wedge.

Long irons are typically the one iron through the four iron, have a longer shaft, and less loft, but commonly they are somewhat lighter than short irons. Many of us think long irons are hard to get under control, and therefore they don't use long and mid iron golf clubs. These irons require high swing speeds to obtain good results, and a solid foundation, or stance, can give the golfer the ability to swing more powerfully and hit the longer clubs more consistently. Visualize Ernie Els, or Tiger Woods, and the stability they maintain with their stance and posture throughout their swings. This is what you are trying to achieve.

Long irons are an absolute joy to hit, but can be very difficult to hit, as well and learning to master golf irons is said to be one of the most difficult lessons for beginning and intermediate golfers alike. Among the longest clubs in the bag, long irons can even give good players trouble. These types of clubs are no longer carried by many golfers, many of whom are now opting for fairway woods or other new hybrid clubs to cover some of the same distance as their long irons. Even if you don't carry these clubs, practicing with one can help improve your swing.
